Event description This two hour on line training course covers the clerk's role in the exclusion process in detail. It is appropriate for clerks who are completely new to exclusions and also those who have had some experience in this area but who need to update and refresh their knowledge. The session covers:

·       National guidance on exclusions

·       The exclusion process from start to finish

·       The duty on governors to review exclusions in different circumstances

·       The role of the clerk before, during and after an exclusion hearing

·       Tips for clerks on best practice

·       How clerks can best support and advise governors through the exclusion procedure

·       What clerks should do in the event of a number of unusual "what if..." scenarios

·       Where clerks may seek additional support and guidance for their role.

Malcolm Leigh was a teacher in the secondary sector for 25 years, half of that time in senior leadership roles. He taught in three different schools, two in Hertfordshire and one in North London. He then worked for 14 years within Children’s Services at Hertfordshire County Council in a variety of roles including school admissions (particularly with reference to complex cases), home to school transport and school exclusions. With reference to exclusions he represented the Local Authority at over five hundred governor exclusion hearings and many dozens of Independent Appeal/Review Panel hearings. Now semi-retired, he works as an education consultant providing a range of services.
Training objectives At the end of the session clerks should:

· have a thorough understanding of the procedures to be followed in exclusions and have an insight into their part in the process

· Be able to discharge their duties in relation to exclusions with confidence

· Know how to properly support governors in their duty to review exclusions.
