Event description

This session is a supplementary course for Early Career Teachers, overseas trained and other teachers.

Ealing school population is very diverse and many of our pupils are pupils who are learning English as an additional Language (EAL). This session focuses on how children learn additional languages. Participants will gain an understanding of second/ additional language acquisition. It takes a long time (5 years or more) for any pupil to develop academic competency in a second/ additional language, even a pupil who has received adequate prior schooling in their first language. Some pupils maybe disadvantaged as they frequently have limited or interrupted prior schooling, and may be unable to read and write in their first language. The session shares current and well researched practical strategies on how to support English language learners within the British education system.

Trainer: Mirela Temo (EMA/EAL Adviser) / Evi Simigdala (Deputy Headteacher, Allenby Primary)
