Event description The 2010 Equality Act has rightly become much higher profile, placing a General duty and Specific dutiesfor on schools. 
The current Ofsted Inspection Framework, in the Personal development area, also brings new emphasis to:

•       Spiritual, moral, social and cultural development;
•       Fundamental British values;
•       Citizenship;
•       Equality and diversity

Events both in this country and elsewhere have highlighted the need to review policy and practice in our schools.

This session will cover the General and Specific duties of the Equality Act.

There will be an opportunity to assess the relevance of your school’s context to the Protected characteristics.  Disadvantage alone is not a relevant characteristic yet many schools focus on ‘narrowing the gap’.

There will be a little pre session reading in advance of a zoom meeting.

The course is relevant to all governors, but particularly those with an Equality ‘brief’. Likewise any staff with a lead role in Equality / diveristy or inclusivity issues should find it valuable.

Michele Robbins has 30+ years experience working with schools on matters related to leadership and management, safeguarding and equality. She has also been a governor at 7 schools including chairing two IEBs and, for 11 years was an NPQH trainer and assessor. 
Training objectives Participants will:


  • refresh their understanding of the Act, notably the General and Specific duties for schools

  • explore how equality objectives should be based on context, information and evidence, and linked to school improvement priorities

  • evaluate their schools’ current objectives –are they relevant, specific and measurable?

  • understand what is required when publishing objectives and reporting on progress made towards achieving them.

  • Access some questions that could assist them in monitoring and  evaluating practice in their schools.
