Event description The DfE’s Governance Handbook outlines three core functions of governance. The first of these is “to ensure clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction,” which is also referred to in Ofsted’s expectations of governance. Strategic Leadership is also one of the key features of effective governance described in the DfE’s Competency Framework. This online session will incorporate presentation with activities and group discussion. This online session will incorporate presentation with activities and group discussion to explore how governors can fulfil this function. It is suitable for all governors and focuses on how they can appropriately and effectively contribute to the vision, values and strategic direction of the school.

 It will cover:


  • Shared values and ambitious vision

  • Self-evaluation

  • Improvement Planning

  • Resourcing

  • Appraisal

  • Planning to meet Statutory Responsibilities

  • Succession Planning

  • Evaluating and evidencing the strategic effectiveness of the governing board


This session will be run by Sue Stanley, former headteacher of an Ealing primary school and now education leadership consultant
