THE STRATEGIC ROLE OF GOVERNORS (CORE GOVERNOR FUNCTION)

Event description The DfE’s Governance Handbook outlines three core functions of governance. The first of these is “to ensure clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction,” which is one of Ofsted’s key expectations of governance. Strategic Leadership is also one of the key features of effective governance in the DfE’s Competency Framework.

This accessible and interactive session explores how governors can fulfil this function. It is suitable for all governors and focuses on how they can appropriately and effectively contribute to setting the strategic direction of the school. It will cover:

Shared values and ambitious vision
Self-evaluation
Improvement Planning
Resourcing
Appraisal
Planning to meet Statutory Responsibilities
Succession Planning
Evaluating and evidencing the strategic effectiveness of the governing board 
Training objectives

To gain a clearer understanding of the strategic role of the governing board
To explore key aspects of the role
To identify ways to maximise strategic effectiveness
